In 1999, Miles and Marko became fascinated by the idea of distilling bottle-ready beer into whiskey - a first in the whiskey industry. They soon embarked on an amazing 3.5 weeks of distilling 24/7 in the family's classic 1000-gallon Alambic Charentais Pot Still. It took 20,000 gallons of great Pilsner to create just 1000 gallons (24 barrels) of Whiskey.

CHARBAY is an independent family business founded by Miles and Susan Karakasevic. The family is one of the early pioneers in the modern American artisan distillery movement. They began distilling in California in 1983 with Alambic Pot Still Brandy and haven't stopped since.
Marko is Generation XIII to carry on the family's European heritage of fermenting & distilling. It's hard to find someone with a more spontaneous love of the art form, grounded in solid experience. His 25-year apprenticeship coveRed every category of distilling. Only when he'd sourced, distilled and taken to market his very own spirit, his father said he'd earned the right to be called a Master Distiller.
As of January 2017, Marko and his wife, Jenni, carry on the inherited artisan traditions as they assume operations of Charbay Distillery, Mendocino County, CA. Domaine Charbay Winery & Brandy Distillery in Napa Valley will continue on with Susan & Miles at the helm.
This family is hands on and it shows in the quality of everything they bottle. Their sincerity is appreciated by writers and consumers alike.
